Nancy McDonald of Brunswick, formerly of McRae, passed away Thursday, Feb. 25, 2021 at the Senior Care Center in Brunswick.
Funeral will be graveside at the Oak Grove Cemetery in McRae at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 6.
Lay Minister Norwood Davidson will preach the funeral.
She was born in McRae Sept. 24, 1936. She lived strong for 14 years after suffering a stroke in 2008.
She was preceded by her husband, John Harold McDonald; parents, Emma Curtis and H.B. Barnes Sr.; brothers, H.B. Barnes Jr., Don Barnes, Jack Barnes; and sister, Emogene Daniel.
Nancy graduated from North Georgia College June, 1, 1958 with a Bachelors in Education and received a Masters from Old Dominion University in 1979. She taught elementary education for over 30 years finishing her career as an assistant principal in the Bryan County (GA) school system in Richmond Hill.
She was an author writing a book of shorts stories about growing up on her parents chicken farm outside McRae – “Home is Where the Chickens Were.”
After retirement she enjoyed antiques and shopped stores from Virginia to Florida with her husband John Harold McDonald. They called it “junkin” and specialized in cranberry depression glass.
Nancy was a wonderful wife and mother and was known for scratch made pound cakes, chicken and dumplings, meatloaf, biscuits and “tired mama cake.”
She was a member on the McRae United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the church in her memory.
Survivors include her sons, Lee Flanders and John Flanders; daughter-in-law, Donna Flanders; grandsons, Matt and Will Flanders; brother, Curtis Barnes; sisters-in-law, Dee Barnes, Marion Barnes.
Anyone planning to attend is asked to social distance as many older friends and family will be in attendance.
