Sylvia Ann Hartman Smith
Sylvia Ann Hartman Smith, 85, of McRae, Georgia passed away on Saturday, Aug. 21, in Canton, Georgia. A graveside funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 25, at Oak Grove Cemetery in McRae, Georgia, with Rev. Ramon Hernandez officiating. The family will greet friends immediately following the service at the graveside.
Mrs. Smith was born on Nov. 12, 1935 in Reynolds, Georgia, the daughter of Timothy Jackson Hartman and Cleo McCarty Hartman. A graduate of Wesleyan College in Macon, Georgia, she was married to the late Alexander Peterson Smith, Jr. on July 19, 1959, in Reynolds, Georgia. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Charlie Marshall Hartman.
She served as the Director of the Telfair County Department of Family & Children Services, where she worked for 30 years. Prior to this role, she worked as a public-school teacher in both Dodge and Telfair counties. She was a member of the McRae United Methodist Church and previously served as a judge at flower shows for the National Council of State Garden Clubs.
Survivors include three children: Alex Peterson Smith III (Lisa) of Cincinnati, Ohio, Anita Smith Mashburn (Matt) of Cartersville, Georgia; Malcolm McNeil Smith II (Bonnie) of Canton, Georgia; and six grandchildren: Alex Smith and Parker Smith; Melissa Mashburn Adamek (Carl) and Lindsey Mashburn; and Malcolm Smith and Teagan Smith; sister, Elise Hartman Gillespie of Macon, Georgia; brother, Kenneth J. Hartman of Atlanta, Georgia.
